Last chance to get race on single equalities agenda

14/12/2005

ACT NOW! Spend a few minutes to lobby MPs and the equality minister over the absence of race in the proposed single equalities body.

LAST CHANCE TO LOBBY OVER RACE BODY!

Act now! Spend a couple of minutes to keep race on the agenda.

Sign the Statement Please sign the statement drawn up by the Mayor of London, the National Assembly Against Racism, 1990 Trust, Black Londoners Forum, Operation Black Vote and Lesbian and Gay Coalition Against Racism.

Click on the above links to send e-mail lobbying messages to government equalities minister Meg Munn, and key MPs who represent seats with the highest black and minority ethnic (BME) populations, or who are BME themselves.

We would also ask you to support a statement, drawn up by anti-racist organisations, through our easy-to-use sign-up system. This statement is already supported by 130 organisations and individuals including Doreen Lawrence and Sir Bill Morris.

The reason why we need to lobby now is to prevent the government ignoring race while setting up the proposed super-equalities body, the Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR).

Ministers plan to abolish the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) and merge race with current commissions covering disability and gender, plus the new areas of sexual orientation, religion, age and human rights.

The government have no plans to include a race committee within CEHR, or guarentee BME representation on the CEHR board, or to ring-fence money for tackling racism.

This will take Britain back 30 years on race equality. We cannot afford to sideline the fight against racism when we have such stark disproportionate BME rates of infant mortality, school exclusion, police stop and search, heavier sentences, workplace discrimination, mental health, homelessness and more.

At current rates of progress it will take 300 years to achieve racial equality. We want equality in my lifetime, not 12 generations time. Please lobby our decision-makers to ensure they count us in.

Don't forget to personalise your message and add your name and contact details. We ask that you copy us in on your email correspondence with MPs so we can track responses.
