Michael Howard says he’s an ethnic minority

By Lester Holloway
2/12/2003

CONSERVATIVE leader Michael Howard has announced that he is an ethnic minority.

Is it ‘cos he is black?

The former hardline Tory Home Secretary stunned political commentators with his admission, for the first time, that he’s an ethnic minority.

Speaking on Breakfast with Frost last Sunday, Howard said women and ethnic minority could progress in the Conservative Party, adding: "I’m proof of that."

Howard comes from a Jewish Romanian family who moved to Britain from a poverty-stricken Transylvanian village.

But as Home Secretary Howard built up a fearsome reputation for tackling asylum seekers, and pushed through several laws which upset anti-racist campaigners.

But Howard’s new-found pride in his heritage has not impressed some. Joseph Ochieno, a London-based African community leader, said: "If Howard wants to be ethnic minority, let him come to live in the streets of Peckham."

Ochieno said Howard regularly ‘played the race card’ while Home Secretary, and his new association with black communities did not ring true.

And Chief Inspector Leroy Logan, chairman of the Metropolitan Black Police Association, said Howard was a ‘political chameleon’ whose words fooled no-one.

"He’s in the same mould as IDS and Hague. The party hasn’t changed in centuries. They might have the odd black candidate but they’re token, and that’s it."

Former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith has said that racism has ‘no part’ in the party, but so far Howard or any of his front bench team has failed to make a keynote speech on race.
