Trevor lobbies MPs for race committee

16/1/2006

CRE CHAIRMAN Trevor Phillips was engaged in last ditch lobbying of MPs over the creation of a single equalities body.

Trevor Phillips
Briefing: Trevor Phillips

Mr Phillips wants to persuade MPs to vote for a race committee as part of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR).

MPs will vote later this afternoon in the last Commons debate before the Equalities Bill, which sets up the new body and confirms abolition of the CRE, becomes law.

Several MPs, led by former foreign office minister Keith Vaz, are expected to call for race not to be left out of the new £70m a year super-equalities body.

Mr Phillips is briefing MPs in the hope they will back amendments creating a race committee to match the disability committee which the government are proposing.
